Henri Troyat was a French writer of partly Armenian origin. He was born as Lev Aslanovich Tarasov .

His family left Russia before the October Revolution and, after much wandering, arrived in Paris in 1920.

Troyat's first novel, Faux Jour , was published in 1935. It won him the "Prix Eugène Dabit du roman populiste". In 1938 he won the "Prix Goncourt" for his novel L'Araigne . He became known for historical novels. Many of those books formed series such as Tant Que La Terre Durera (three volumes, 1947-1950) and Les Semailles et les Moissons (five volumes, 1953-1958), both based on his memories of Russia. In 1952, together with La Neige and Deuil , he wrote the story of a fraternal dispute that takes place in the mountains. He gained a lot of fame with it.

In addition to novels, Troyat also wrote numerous biographies of Russian historical figures (such as Leo Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, Tsarina Catherine the Great and Tsar Peter the Great) as well as of the most important French writers of the 19th century (such as Guy de Maupassant, Émile Zola, Gustave Flaubert , Honoré de Balzac and the Symbolist poets Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine).

Since 1959 he was a member of the "Académie française".

Henri Troyat died at the age of 95 in Paris where he is buried at the "Cimetière du Montparnasse". He left more than a hundred works.
