Ajman

Ajman is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. The capital of the emirate is Ajman. With an area of 260 square kilometers, Ajman is the smallest emirate. The government is located in Ajman and is bordered by Sharjah to the north, east and south. To the west lies the Persian Gulf.

Due to the large urban expansion, Ajman almost forms a whole with Sharjah.

The main source of income was fishing, pearling and shipbuilding. The emirate has no oil revenues and has now focused on the ship industry. Traditional dhows are also still built along the Khor Ajman creek.

On October 15, 1963, the Baroody Stamp Co Ltd in Beirut announces that the rulers of Fujeirah, Umm al Qiwain and Ajman will open independent post offices. Fujeirah from November 22, 1963, Umm al Qiwain from November 27, 1963 and Ajman from November 29, 1963. In addition to ordinary correspondence and registered mail (registered letters), sea and air mail are accepted and delivered.

Ajman opened its post office on 29 November 1963 and its first set of stamps was dated 20 June 1964. Before the first stamps, the mail from Ajman was sent to Dubai in bundles for dispatch. The Ajman Post Office came into existence after an agreement between the Ruler of Ajman, Shaikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Na'imi and the Baroody Stamp Co of Beirut. The agreement was signed on 29 September 1963.

Some key points mentioned in the agreement:
"The Company undertakes to arrange a postal service in Ajman and to arrange postal services to all parts of the world within two months from the date of signing this contract.
The Company undertakes to arrange all necessary publicity for the Ajman stamps, including the printing of brochures and the distribution of cultural and publicity pamphlets free of charge to all parts of the world, as well as their disclosure to philatelists and in international circles such as the United Nations, UNESCO, etc.
The company undertakes to prepare all necessary designs for printing postage stamps and to obtain government approval before printing.
The Company undertakes to print postage stamps for local use and for philatelists in the world in necessary quantities and with the approval of the Government."

On July 5, 1966, Ajman opened a post office in its dependency Manama, providing full local and international postal service.

All Ajman issues were officially no longer valid for postage as of 01/04/1973 (see further under United Arab Emirates). Anything issued in the name of Ajman from that date onwards is therefore somewhat dubious material.
