The Macau Peninsula is the oldest and most densely populated part of Macau (People's Republic of China). It has an area of 8.5 square kilometres (5 by 1.8 kilometres) and is geographically connected to the province of Guangdong by a 200-metre-wide isthmus. The Portas do Cerco gateway was built on the northern isthmus and provides access to the peninsula from the north.
