The record branch of Philips arose from the acquisition of De Hollandsche Decca Distributie. Philips set up a division for this: Philips Phonographic Industry. Located in Baarn. The Dutch section of this was Phonogram.  More

Philips

Philips' record branch has its origins in the company of Henk van Zoelen. From 1930 he owned the exclusive rights for the Netherlands from the English Decca. He used De Hollandsche Decca Distributie as the name. In 1934 he started his own pressing plant in Amsterdam. Philips assisted in making the pressing moulds. Immediately after the war, Philips became increasingly interested in the record companies and bought the shares of De Hollandsche Distributie. These were placed in a new division: NV Philips Phonographic Industry or PPI. Located in Baarn. This division, among other things, arranged the release numbers worldwide. This led to an ingenious system of release numbers. The Dutch part of PPI was named Phonogram. After the takeover of Decca, the first records were released on Philips labels in 1951. These were 78 rpm records and after 1952 also EPs. It was not until May 1, 1956 that the first Philips 45 rpm single came onto the market. More than a year after Bovema and Dureco.

In addition to the Philips label, PPI also managed the labels Decca (a continuation of De Hollandsche Decca Distributie), Fontana and Mercury. There were also a number of sub-labels and labels with which Phonogram had contracts. Deram (sub-label of Decca), but also London, Island, Arcade, Brunswick, Coral, Page One, President, Scepter, Specialty, Star-Club, Treshold (known for the Moody Blues) and United Artists.

In 1962, Phonogram teamed up with Siemens, the owner of Polydor and Deutsche Grammophon, among others. In 1972 the partnership was converted into a company called PolyGram. In the Netherlands, Phonogram and Polydor remained separate subsidiaries of PolyGram until Philips bought out Siemens in 1987. In 1998, PolyGram was acquired by Canada's Seagram, which then merged PolyGram with their Universal Music Group.

Philips/Phonogram had its own office in quite many countries. These departments were encouraged to recruit and release their own artists. Phonogram did not have pressing plants in all countries. So a lot was pressed for export in the Netherlands.

The following release system was devised for 45 rpm (EPs and singles):

4xx xxx with some prefixes such as BE for EPs (always in a photo sleeve)

3xx xxx prefixed with RF, JF, PF and BF (F stands for Forty-five) for singles from 1956 to early 1970

6xxx xxx without prefix. Used from early 1970 to early 1983

The first 2 (or 3) crosses form a kind of country code. The last 3 is the sequence number in that series. See the Philips singles series in Catawiki and the Philips EP series.

Well-known series for the Netherlands are:
318 000 PF to 318 922 PF 1957 - 1963
327 500 JF to 327 999 JF 1963 - 1966
333 500 JF to 333 999 JF 1966 - 1968
334 500 JF to 334 577 JF 1968
334 600 JF to 334 699 JF 1968 - 1969
336 600 JF to 336 611 JF 1970

Then
6012 000 to 6012 999 1970 - 1980

And finally
8xx xxx-7 (7 stands for 7 inches) 1983 - 1993

(Source: Warm Sounds 10, 11 and 12).

Addition:
Presumably the 7-digit numbers of the singles in the period 1970-1983 all started with 60.
The LPs released in the Netherlands from that period also had 7 numbers, starting with 64 or 66, among others. The LPs have not yet been charted. However, Philips LPs have started to be placed in series.

Gevestigd in Baarn.

6xxx xxx zonder prefix. Gebruikt vanaf begin 1970 to begin 1983

318 000 PF t/m 318 922 PF 1957 - 1963

327 500 JF t/m 327 999 JF 1963 - 1966

333 500 JF t/m 333 999 JF 1966 - 1968

334 500 JF t/m 334 577 JF 1968

334 600 JF t/m 334 699 JF 1968 - 1969

336 600 JF t/m 336 611 JF 1970

Daarna

6012 000 t/m 6012 999 1970 - 1980

En tot slot

8xx xxx-7 (7 staat voor 7 inch) 1983 - 1993

(Bron: Warm Sounds 10, 11 en 12).

Aanvulling:
