Mercury Records is a record label that operates independently in the United Kingdom and as part of the "Island Def Jam Music Group" in the United States. The label was recently activated as a "frontline label" in Australia by Universal Music.

Mercury Record Corporation was founded in Chicago in 1945 by Irving Green, Berle Adams and Arthur Talmadge. They were known together for their jazz and blues music. Early on in its inception, Mercury opened two locations in Chicago and St. Louis. The company competed with major labels such as "Columbia", "Decca" and "RCA Victor". It managed to break into the music world thanks to contracts with Frankie Laine, Vic Damone, Tony Fontane and Patti Page.

The company released a large number of songs over the years under the Mercury label and a few sub-labels such as "Blue Rock Records", "Cumberland Records", "EmArcy Records", "Fontana Records", "Limelight Records", "Philips Records". ", "Smash Records" and "Wing Records". The music Mercury released ranged from classical music to psychedelic rock. The sub-labels focused on their own music genre, such as "EmArcy" for jazz and "Blue Rock" for soul music.

In the early 1950s, Norman Granz, formerly a regular in Mercury's jazz division, started his own record label, "Norgran". In 1951, under the direction of recording engineer C. Robert Fine and recording director David Hall, Mercury began a technique for recording symphony orchestras with a single microphone. The first recording using this technique, sold under the name "Mercury Living Presence", was "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Rafael Kubelík and the "Chicago Symphony Orchestra". The group most famous for using this technique was the "Minnesota Orchestra".

In 1955 Mercury started using 3 omni-directional microphones to make stereo recordings. In 1961 Mercury improved this technique by using a 35mm magnetic film. Also in 1961 they sign a contract with "Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV", after this company had missed a deal with "Columbia Records". In 1969 Mercury changed its name to Mercury Record Productions, Inc. . In 1981 Mercury was merged with some American labels from "PolyGram" to form "PolyGram Records, Inc.". Under "PolyGram", Mercury absorbed "Casablanca Records" and became a rock and pop label.

In late 1998 "PolyGram" was bought by "Seagram" and merged with "Universal Music Group".
