The DERAM label was launched by Decca in 1966 to introduce a new recording technique: the "Deramic Sound System" (hereinafter referred to as: DSS). It used two four-track recorders - instead of one four-track recorder - to achieve a more natural-sounding stereo sound. The two recorders were soon replaced by one Ampex eight-track recorder. However, due to the rapid developments in stereo recording technology, DSS was soon overtaken by other methods, after which Deram's audiophile role was played out.
Initially, the new system was used to release a series of instrumental, easy-listening LPs. The remaining plates were not recorded with the DSS.
With the emergence of psychedelic and symphonic influences in pop and rock music (heard, for example, on The Beatles' "St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"), there was a need for better recording techniques in this segment as well. As a result, DERAM quickly developed as a label for pop music, especially progressive pop music, and modern jazz.
