For the establishment of the label, $10,000 was borrowed from a friend of the Ertegün family, who mortgaged his house for this. In the beginning it was just a jazz and R&B label. In 1953, Jerry Wexler was brought in by Ertegün because Abramson was drafted into the military for the Korean War. On his return in 1955, his position had been taken entirely by Wexler. Herb Abramson was given the label "Atco" under his management. As a thank you for services rendered, "The Coasters" and Bobby Darin were brought to this label for Abramson to work with. Brother Nesuhi Ertegün was recruited in 1955. He was in charge of the jazz part of the label and was responsible for major record deals with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane, among others. Later this position was taken by Joel Dorn. In 1958 Abramson left the company. In the same year, the Ertegüns and Wexler bought out the other two shareholders for more than three million dollars. This investment was more than recouped with two hits by Bobby Darin in 1958, namely "Splish Splah" and "Queen of the Hop".
