Piko

In 1949 the Russians commissioned the Soviet Staatliche AG Kabel Werk Chemnitz with the production of toy trains for delivery to Russia. Pico Express was chosen as the brand name, but the Chemnitzer Gerätewerke logo was also on the packaging. The H0 trains ran according to the 2-rail alternating current system. In 1950 the Russians handed over the factory to VEB RFT, which produced electrotechnical items and was familiar with Bakelite. In 1952 Pico moved to Sonneberg and became part of VEB Elektro Industrie Oberlind (EIO). Pico has used the experience of EIO to release new and better models under a new name: Piko, an abbreviation of Pionier Konstruktion. They also switched to direct current. Bakelite was replaced by plastic around 1957. Due to the better products, the demand increased, which led to an extra factory space in Radeburg. In 1962 Piko continued independently as VEB Piko Sonneberg and in 1964 was put in charge of the entire model railway production in the GDR. Producers became suppliers to Piko, although the original producer could still be traced from the catalog numbers on the packaging. The suppliers included Schicht, Gützhold, Auhagen and Pilz. In 1964, the production of gauge N was also started. For political reasons, the factory in Radeburg had to be closed again in 1965. After the reunification of Germany in 1989, Piko continued until 1991 when reorganization was necessary. It turned out that Piko was loss-making and had to be put up for sale. Talks about takeovers came to nothing until René Wilfer bought Piko together with his wife Ortrun in 1992 and started Piko Spielwaren GmbH. First of all, he replaced the outdated machines with modern machines and carried out a reorganization. Track G was introduced in 1993: first buildings, later also rolling stock. Large models could be made with the purchased large machines. Partly because of this, he received an assignment from Lehmann in 1995. With the large machines, his wife Ortrun also started producing buildings for gauge 0 for her own company Piko Modellspielwaren GmbH. That became a success on the American market. The Piko buildings are now sold there under the Model Power brand. In 2008, French models were started in track N on behalf of SAI, a toy importer in France. In 2011, the German market was also entered with gauge N. Piko has also set up its own factory in China where H0 and N are now made.

Verder ging men over op gelijkstroom.
