Keith Edwards and his brother Dale produced Magne-Matic couplings, carriages and parts for gauge H0. Keith was interested in a smaller scale when the Casey Jones Micro Trains brand from Sweden came on the market with American 1:150 models. When that company ran into financial difficulties, Kadee bought the leftovers with the aim of producing smaller-scale models himself. Because the standard was set at 1:160 in Europe in the early 1960s, he was unable to use the Swedish models and Kadee developed carriages and couplings for N gauge. In 1972 the first model came with the brand name Kadee Micro-Trains. In 1983 a small series of narrow gauge N freight cars was acquired from Nelson Gray. Track Z was also introduced in the same year. In 1991 the brothers went their separate ways and the company was split. The Kadee brand was for Dale with gauge H0 and larger and the Micro-Trains brand kept Keith for gauge N and smaller. The company is officially called Micro-Trains Line Co. His son Eric Smith is now director.
