Postcards from Siena

Siena

Siena is an Italian municipality with approximately 53,000 inhabitants and the capital of the eponymous province in Tuscany.

The origins of Siena date back to the Etruscan era, but the city gained particular significance under the Romans, who founded a settlement there. In the Middle Ages, Siena grew into a prosperous and influential city-state, partly thanks to its location along important trade routes, such as the "Via Francigena". During this period, the distinctive Gothic architectural style that still defines the cityscape today also developed.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Siena experienced its greatest flourishing. At that time, the city was in rivalry with Florence, which led, among other things, to Siena's victory in the "Battle of Montaperti" (1260). Nevertheless, Siena later lost power, and in 1555, after a prolonged siege, the city was annexed by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under the leadership of Cosimo I de' Medici.

The city is known worldwide for its rich historical, artistic, and landscape heritage. The medieval cityscape is exceptionally well preserved and displays a strong stylistic unity. A central point is the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, where the famous Palio di Siena is held twice a year. In 1995, the historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 2015, Siena was awarded the title of Italian Capital of Culture.

The Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena is also located in Siena. This bank was founded in 1472 and is considered the oldest still active bank in the world.
