The country was formed on October 8, 1920 from the territory of the Republic of Lithuania and the Second Polish Republic as a result of the mutiny. The troops occupy the territory disputed by Poland and Lithuania around the historic capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnius. Lithuania considered the city its capital, the government in Warsaw thought that the largely Polish-speaking area should be part of the new Poland. On March 24, 1922, the territory was annexed by Poland.
