Australia is located in the southern hemisphere on the continent of Oceania. British colonization started in 1770. On January 1, 1901, the six colonies formed the Commonwealth of Australia. The British monarch is head of state.  More

Stamps from Australia

The six colonies of Australia had their own stamps. In 1901 a "federal" postal service was established. From 1913 uniform stamps were introduced.

Australia is one of the largest countries in the world with an area of 7,600,000 km2.
The country consists of eight 'states'.
Some states had their own stamps with the state's name on them.

  • New South Wales (NSW)

  • Queensland (QLD)

  • South Australia (SA)

  • Tasmania (TAS)

  • Victoria (VIC)

  • [Western Australia] 6

  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

  • Northern Territory (NT)

Service stamps were made from ordinary stamps by making a perforation. Initially these were the letters OS (=On Service) in types I, II or III, later also with VG (Victoria Gouvernment), NSWG (New South Wales Government) or rarer perforations such as UNSW (University New South Wales). The types I, II and III differ in letter size (type I) or number of perforation holes in the S (type II: 11 or type III :12).
