Killing Joke

Killing Joke (1978-1996; 2002-present, UK) - Post punks from Notting Hill, London, whose regular members are Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards) and Geordie Walker (guitar).

About the band name:
A killing joke is a standing expression in English that means something like 'to laugh at your death'. The words in question are mainly used in those situations that are ironic or paradoxical. It's easy to assume that when looking for a band name, inspiration was drawn from a comic strip starring Batman, titled Batman: The Killing Joke . But that album, written by Alan Moore and signed by Brian Holland, wasn't released until 1988, while Killing Joke was formed in 1978. Fortunately, another band name explanation is possible. Monty Python 's comedy team had a skit in their repertoire known as The Funniest Joke in the World ; other names are Joke Warfare and - interesting in this context - Killer Joke . During World War II, according to the sketch, Ernest Scribbler invents the funniest joke in the world ; he writes it down, reads it and dies laughing. His mother finds the joke - she thinks it is a suicide note from her son - and dies after reading it, laughing. Others also fall prey to the joke. The British army confiscates it and has the joke translated into German, but in bits (each word is translated by a separate translator) - there must be no unnecessary deaths. The result is a joke "60,000 times more powerful than the greatest pre-war joke," meaning British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's famous quote Peace for our time (1939). The German joke is used for the first time on July 8, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. And with success: the Germans die laughing by the bushes. The joke reads as follows (German readers should now close their eyes): Wenn ist das Nunstück git und Slottermeyer? Yes!

Ja! Beiherhund das Oder die Flipperwaldt gersput!
