Pilot is the name of a toy brand in Denmark. Hennig Cortsen, together with
C. Sørensen founded the firm Sørensen & Cortsen in 1933. Because they started making cast metal ship models (scale 1:1000), the name Pilot=loods was created. The models were made of an alloy of zinc and lead. Corsten came into contact with Friederich Pelzer who produced similar ship models (1:125) in Berlin under the name Wiking. This led to a long-term collaboration. They sold each other's products, made molds for each other and produced for each other. Many series of Pilot have been published: military figures, airplanes, trains, cars, etc. in various scales. In 1933 Pelzer was commissioned by the Deutsche Reichsbahn to make a model of a streamlined locomotive as a DR promotional model or gift. Production ended up at Pilot. This laid the foundation for a series of non-motorized train models in 1:160 scale. Production continued during the war. Lead was extracted from batteries found at the junkyard. In the early 1950s, the switch was made to plastic models. Cortsen died in 1974. An employee, Egil Gammelgaard, continued the company for a while by only delivering to order. In the end all molds went to Wiking. When Friederich Pelzer also died there in 1981, the molds ended up with Kurt Sieper of Siku.
