Postcards from Douarnenez

Douarnenez

Douarnenez is a French coastal commune on the Sea of Iroise, from which the Bay of Douarnenez also derives its name. The city is located in the department of Finistère, in the region of Brittany.

In 1945, the municipality was expanded through a merger with the neighboring municipalities of Ploaré, Pouldavid, and Tréboul.

Douarnenez has long had the reputation of an important sardine port, closely linked to the many canning factories in the city. However, due to the erratic presence of sardines, which disappeared from the bay over the years, almost all sardine canning factories have gradually closed.

Today, Douarnenez is known as the city with three ports: Port-Rhu, Port du Rosmeur, and Port de Tréboul.

The fishing port of Port du Rosmeur is home to a local fleet of bolincheurs, fishing boats specializing in catching bluefish such as sardines, horse mackerel, anchovies, and mackerel. A large portion of their catch is sold directly, bypassing the fish auction. The port experienced a period of prosperity until the late 1970s and early 1980s, followed by a period of decline. Since the 2010s, there has been a renewed revival. The port of Douarnenez currently also serves as a landing port for fish from other home ports and has additionally developed in the fields of shipbuilding and repair, water sports, and maritime services.

Tréboul and Port-Rhu are important marinas in Finistère. The Douarnenez Port Museum has also been located in Port-Rhu since 1993.
