Peer

Peer was probably the center of a large Frankish domain, which passed into the hands of the abbey of Sint-Truiden in the 8th century. Nevertheless, prehistoric finds point to an even earlier habitation. The oldest known inhabited place in Peer is Molhem with its burial mounds. The specific thing about these burial mounds is that the numerous finds date from different periods such as the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages and are located together on a relatively small area in the Dommel Valley.

On February 9, 1367, Peer, which was part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, received the title of “city” from his feudal landlord Everaert van der Marck. The current historic city center still consists of a Franconian market square, with on the north side the former cloth hall dating from 1637 – the oldest preserved city hall in Limburg – in Maasland Renaissance style.

The elevation to a city marked the beginning of a great period of prosperity for Peer. All kinds of cottage industries arose within the city walls: wool and cloth trade, weaving industry, leather and copper processing and the manufacture of agricultural products. In the 14th/15th century the castle (1320), the monastery Agnetendal (1384), the church tower (which served as a fortress tower and dates from 1392) and the Saint Trudo church (1422) were built.

At the end of the 15th century Peer fell into disrepair. Infectious diseases, passing troops, marauding mobs and religious strife took their toll. In 1619 almost the entire city burned down. Despite the difficulties, an open cloth hall was built in 1637, which later became City Hall. However, the decline was unstoppable. The former textile industry and cottage industry completely disappeared. By Royal Decree of July 19, 1985, Peer regained the title of City. The name "Peer" is said to refer to the Latin "Pirgus" and the old French "pierge" or "paved road". (statement formulated by Prof. Em. J. Stinissen, honorary citizen of the city of Peer).
