Soft Machine

Soft Machine

Before 1970, the group played psychedelic music influenced by jazz, jazz rock and classical music.
When the first album was recorded, Daevid Allen had already left the group. After this album was completed, Kevin Ayers followed (who was succeeded by Hugh Hopper).

With the double album Third it became clear that the music was increasingly moving towards psychedelic jazz and free jazz. Only the work of Robert Wyatt ("Moon In June") still somewhat resembles the "old" Soft Machine.
In the other songs the combination of the remarkable, almost irritating, organ sound of Ratledge and the sax sound (usually on soprano sax) of newcomer Elton Dean stands out. Various parts are played in unison.
The song "Out Bloody-Rageous" also shows minimal music influence (particularly Terry Riley).

After "Third" Robert Wyatt also left the group. It became clear that Soft Machine's course was set by Mike Ratledge.

The album "Fourth" was mainly influenced by the free jazz of John Coltrane. Sometimes this influence is related to plagiarism (in Virtually a part that is played back note by note).
There is no such thing as pop music anymore. Soft Machine seems like a real jazz group at that time. However, the musical parts are not really improvised (as is usually the case in jazz), but largely or completely composed and learned by heart. At the concerts in that period, the same songs are always played, in the same order.

Of the triptych "Third", "Fourth" and "Fifth", the last album is certainly the least balanced. This was probably caused by internal tensions. The replacement for drummer Robert Wyatt, Phil Howard, is replaced by John Marshall during the recordings.
Still, this album contains some gems for the fans. Babbington's (sometimes) brushed bass gives a new timbre.
After the recordings, in the course of 1972, Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper left the group.

A new period begins with the double album "Sixth". Elton Dean has since been replaced by Karl Jenkins. The group again allows for influences other than jazz, such as minimal music and classical music.

With the eighth album "Bundles" the group (with a new guitarist!) becomes more and more a rock group.

Notable members: Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen, Mike Ratledge, and later, among others, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean and Karl Jenkins.

Bekende leden: Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen, Mike Ratledge, en later o.a. Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean en Karl Jenkins.
