While his family is being murdered by uncle Matthias De Dorre, baby Tristan Van Halsburg is rescued in the nick of time by an educator. A wolf leader will raise him further. Later, this wolf pack brings Tristan to Abel, the leader of a band of robbers, the throat cutters. That should make him a ruthless warrior. Consultant Milos Shaggan is the man in control and has been searching for years for the man who carries the 'brand'. A great manhunt ensues for Tristan, the knight-errant.
Monk Aelred Von Hilsheim records the adventure very carefully for us. Milos has a son, Aeolus, but can hardly be proud of it. We learn important things about Humbeline on the deathbed of Matthias.
