Jess Long is a Belgian detective comic strip series, created in 1969 by Arthur Piroton and Maurice Tillieux, which first appeared with the episode "Kidnapping" in issue 1639 of the weekly magazine Spirou of 11 September 1969. More

Jess Long, a tall, dark-haired, slim, pipe-smoking FBI agent, is his partner. His partner is Slim Sullivan, who always wears a hat and hides his eyes behind dark glasses. He's considerably less elegant than Jess Long with his bow tie, but a better shot. Together, they solve a wide variety of criminal cases throughout North America.

The stories began in 1969 in the weekly magazine Spirou, but only appeared in albums from 1976 onwards, and they included Tillieux's short stories. Subsequently, long stories and collections of short stories alternated, each by a different, successive author.

Maurice Tillieux created this detective series especially for Arthur Piroton because he appreciated his drawing skills and regretted that his series were not more successful.

Maurice Tillieux adapted the series to the drawing style of Arthur Piroton, whose style was completely different from that of Spirou magazine. Piroton was influenced by American masters, particularly Alex Raymond (the characters of Jess Long and Slim Sullivan are also graphically very close to those of Rip Kirby, created by Raymond: Long's pipe and Sullivan's glasses).

The atmosphere of the episodes written by Tillieux is interspersed with Fantasy and Horror, which was very unusual at that time for Spirou.

As he did for other series (Guus Slim, Natasja, Baard en Kale), Tillieux sometimes reuses (edited) old scripts that he had written for the series Félix (Kidnapping, Voor eeuwige KO, Het doodskopmasker, Bloedig spoor, De Krabbengrot).

After Tillieux's death on February 2, 1978, the series became more of a classic police series.

Screenwriter Francis Dorao, one of Maurice Tillieux's replacements, wrote the episode "Poedersneeuw" (Powder Snow); this episode takes place in Belgium.

Jess Long, een lange, donkerharige, slanke, pijprokende FBI-agent. Zijn partner is Slim Sullivan, die altijd een hoed draagt en zijn ogen verbergt achter een donkere bril.
