The Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, remained in power until 1979, when he fled Iran due to the Islamic Revolution. The new leader became Ayatollah Khomeini. The Westernization of Iran—known as Persia until 1935—came to a halt. Marjane Satrapi (born 1969) faced fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism. A mandatory headscarf was a first sign.
