Avenue

'Avenue' is considered the first glossy magazine in the Netherlands. At the time, the magazine was mainly aimed at the affluent public in need of luxury products. Not surprisingly, Avenue was considered an elite magazine.

In the early years 'Avenue' still had a fairly high 'Margriet content'. A lot of attention was paid to knitting fashion. Readers could order the patterns for free. On the other hand, the modern woman couldn't be happier with the beautiful photos showing the latest fashion trends from London.

From the beginning, renowned authors, such as Cees Nooteboom, Hugo Claus and Harry Mulisch, and photographers, such as Eddy Posthuma de Boer, collaborated to publish a new, flashy edition every month. As in other magazines, attention was also paid to travel, culinary, literature, fashion and opinion. However, in 'Avenue' the sections overlapped, creating innovative combinations with titles such as: 'Avenue Journaal', 'Club of Gourmets', 'Fashion Business', 'Avenue Tourism' and 'Salon'. The reports made readers' mouths water.

The tone of 'Avenue' was playful and critical. In addition to popular topics, much attention was also paid to politics, economics and science. It was therefore not very surprising that at the end of the eighties the magazine was no longer marketed exclusively for women.

At the end of the 1970s, the magazine had approximately 125,000 readers. After that, the circulation started to decline slowly. In 1995 the circulation of 'Avenue' was only 22,000 copies. The reason for the rapidly declining circulation was the number of new glossy's that sprang up like mushrooms in the eighties and nineties. Previously, the editors only had to compete with the magazine 'Elegance'. The publisher decided in 1995 to pull the plug on 'Avenue' after the December edition. In 2002 Sanoma publishers had made another attempt to re-launch 'Avenue'. This attempt was discontinued after six months.
