Doornik

Tournai (Tournai) is a city in the west of the Belgian province of Hainaut on the Scheldt with almost 70,000 inhabitants and the largest municipality in Belgium in terms of area.
The city is the second oldest city in Belgium and has played a major role in cultural history.

Tournai already existed in Roman times and came into Frankish hands around 432 through an invasion of Chlodio. Under the Salian Franks Childeric and Clovis, Tournai was the capital of the Frankish Empire (until 486). Clovis moved the Frankish center of power to Paris, but Tournai's role was not over. Clovis made the city the episcopal see on his departure, covering all of Flanders. Eleutherius, born in Tournai, became the first bishop.

Under Charles the Bald, the first king of western France, the county of Flanders was created around 850, which remained a fief of the French king. The city attracted prosperous merchants and their pursuit of independence led Tournai to come directly under the French crown from 1187. In the 15th century, the city had a flourishing cloth trade and was a major supplier of tapestries.

The town remained French until 1513; then the English King Henry VIII conquered Tournai. This makes it the only city in Belgium that was occupied by England. In 1519, the administration of the city was transferred back to France.

Emperor Charles V added the city to his Dutch inheritance in 1521, which was followed by a period of religious disputes and economic decline. At that time, Tournai became a Calvinist stronghold under the influence of ministers such as Ambrosius Wille. After the Iconoclasm, which reached the city on August 23, 1566, the Calvinists demanded their own churches.

As a result of the Eternal Edict (1577), the Spanish troops left the city. In 1581 it was recaptured by the Spanish governor Alexander Farnese after a long siege.

Under the French king Louis XIV, the city came into French possession. At the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, the French had to accept, according to the provisions of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), that the former Spanish Netherlands became Austrian.

In 1815 Tournai became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and in 1830 of Belgium. In 1940 the city suffered considerable damage at the hands of the German occupiers.
