Tee-Set

Tee-Set was a Dutch band from Delft, playing rhythm and blues in the 1960s and pop music from the early 1970s onward. Tee-Set's most important hits were "Ma belle amie" (1969) and "She Likes Weeds" (1970). Composer Hans van Eyck was the musical brainchild.

The band was founded in 1965 by Peter Tetteroo, Gerard Romeyn, Polle Eduard, and Carry Janssen. This lineup can be seen on the cover of the first single, "Early in the Morning." Robbie Plazier then joined the group as organist. With Hans van Eyck as supporting songwriter (he contributed four tracks), the first album, "Emotion," was recorded. After the release of the first album, Plazier was replaced by Van Eyck as a permanent member. Gerard Romeyn left the band in early 1967 and joined The Motions (replacing Robbie van Leeuwen). Romeyn was replaced by British guitarist Ray Fenwick (Romeyn is still featured on the cover of the single "Don't You Leave," but Fenwick can be seen in a video for the song from the pop show "Moef Ga Ga").

A disagreement between singer Tetteroo and manager Theo Kuppens, on the one hand, and the other band members on the other, led to internal quarrels. The income Kuppens earned from the hit "Don't You Leave" (an old blues song the manager had recorded under his own name) played a role. Fenwick, Van Eijck, and Eduard left and formed a new band, After Tea. Carry Janssen had already been dismissed from the group by then, so the cover of "Now's the Time" featured a four-piece band again. Tetteroo recruited three new musicians from the Amsterdam group James Mean to continue Tee Set: Franklin Madjid (bass), Joop Blom (drums), and Ferdi Karmelk (guitar). Jan-Pieter Boekhoorn became the new keyboardist, making Tee Set a quintet once again. This marked the end of James Mean, as singer Michel van Dijk found employment with Les Baroques. The Tee Set established their own record company, Tee-Set Records (a first in Dutch music history), to manage the rights themselves. After a while, Boekhoorn was replaced by Peter Seilberger.

With the return of Hans van Eyck in 1969, a phase began in which Tee Set slowly transformed into a pop group, playing catchy songs. The personnel remained a mess: Dihl Bennink (also spelled Dill, brother of Leo Bennink from the JayJays and The Motions) became the new guitarist, and Herman van Boeyen briefly replaced Blom on drums.

The biggest hit in the band's history was released in 1969: "Ma belle amie." In the spring of 1970, the song reached number five on the American charts. Bennink was replaced by Ferry Lever (also from After Tea). The LP "The Morning of My Days" contained the only song to reach number one in the charts: "She Likes Weeds." By then, Max Spangenberg had become the new drummer. However, the song was boycotted in the United States because it allegedly referred to drug use. According to lyricist Peter Tetteroo, the title refers to weeds and is derived from dialogue from the film "Funeral in Berlin" (1966). Tetteroo mistakenly stated in various interviews at the time that the dialogue originated from "The IPCRESS File" (1965), but that was the film's precursor.

Tee Set had a consistent lineup between 1970 and 1975. In 1975, Lever was replaced by Polle Eduard, but the band didn't have any more hits. In 1979, they had another hit with the song "Linda Linda," but after that, the group went silent for four years, and the members each went their own way.

Tee Set resumed performing for several years in 1983, featuring Peter Tetteroo and a varying lineup. While they no longer had any hits, the band played festivals regularly during this time. Tetteroo died on September 9, 2002, at the age of 55.
