The group was formed in 1961 in Detroit. It was a composite of two Detroit local groups, "The Primes" and "The Distants". When the group started under the name "The Temptations" it consisted of Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Elbridge Bryant, Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks.

When "The Temptations" were hired at Motown in 1961, the lead vocals were split between Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks. Sometimes one of the other three sang lead. All 7 singles recorded from 1961 to 1963, "Dream Come True", recorded in 1962, achieved the greatest success. Several songwriters, such as Berry Gordy himself and Norman Whitfield, had tried to make a hit for the group. They all failed. Then Smokey Robinson came into the picture as a songwriter. The first song he wrote was, "I Want A Love I Can See". This song showed that at that time Robinson was the best man for The Temptations.

Elbridge Bryant was fired in 1963. After The Temptations finished their performance at the Motown Christmas party, Paul Williams suggested they sing a few more songs. In 1966, Norman Whitfield became the new songwriter and producer of The Temptations, replacing Smokey Robinson. The reason for this was that Whitfield's "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" outperformed Robinson's "Get Ready". After this, hits such as "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You" were written. With the arrival of Dennis Edwards, a whole new era began for The Temptations. His powerful voice allowed Norman Whitfield to adopt a new style, the "psychedelic soul". Together with "Sly & the Family Stone" they were the founders of this new style. The style was mostly to make something clear to the world. The Temptations also got a lead vocal in every song.
