James Brown

Brown, James

James Joseph Brown , commonly known as "The Godfather of Soul" and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business", was an American entertainer and winner of the "Grammy Award". Brown is considered one of the most important and controversial figures of the 20th century and the development of soul music. He is seen as the co-founder of the funk genre.

Brown is said to have been born in Barnwell, South Carolina, in 1933, but some sources cite 1928 as his birth year and Pulaski, Tennessee, as his hometown. Because his parents could not take care of him, he grew up in his aunt's brothel, in the 1930s crisis in Augusta, Georgia. At the age of 16, he was convicted of armed robbery. After three years in prison, he was released on the intercession of Bobby Byrd on the condition that he not show up in Augusta again and that he would look for a job. After a short sports career in boxing and baseball, he turned to music.

He was married four times; successively with Deidre Jenkins, Velma Warren (1954-1969) and Adrienne Rodriguez. This last marriage lasted twelve years, until his wife died in 2002. In that year, James Brown married one last time, to Tomi Rae Hynie.

Throughout his career, he has influenced many musicians. In the 1960s he was imitated by other artists. In the mid-1970s, several musicians left his band and went more into the funk side, à la George Clinton. In the late 1970s to the late 1980s, Brown was a source of inspiration for rap, breakdance and hip-hop, with DJs like "Grandmaster Flash" frequently using samples of Brown's work. In the 1980s, he was the most sampled artist in the world.

Brown is often referred to as "The Godfather of Soul", "Soul Brother Number One" and "Mr. Dynamite". He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1983, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition to his musical career, Brown also pursued a business career, building an empire of radio stations, hotels, clubs and restaurants. As his success waned, he was forced to sell almost his entire business empire.

In the late 1980s, Brown had to spend another few years in prison after threatening people with a gun and trying to evade arrest. After his release in 1991, he toured the world as a living legend.

In December 2004, Brown was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died at the age of 73 on Christmas Day 2006 at 7:45 am, after being hospitalized the day before with pneumonia. The cause of death was congestive heart failure caused by the pneumonia. Hundreds of thousands of people said goodbye in New York, the remains of the singer rode aboard a horse-drawn carriage through the black neighborhood of Harlem, among other things. After this, James Brown was laid out in the legendary "Apollo Theater". The coffin remained open on the concert hall stage for seven hours, allowing fans, family and colleagues to pay him their final farewell. Several stars such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Isaac Hayes and Smokey Robinson did. The funeral was held with an audience at the James Brown Arena in Augusta.

In March 2007, it was announced that James Brown 's body had been moved to a crypt at the home of one of his daughters in Columbia, South Carolina. Due to an internal family struggle, the remains were moved several times and, according to widow Tomi Rae Hynie, his legs were amputated for DNA tests.

Dynamite" genoemd.
