Opgericht in 1935 de doelgroep van Men Only was, volgens een redactiebijdrage
"a man up from the country, another on leave, a professional man, and a fourth who was ‘a jolly fellow who knew when to crack a joke and when to shut up", ‘Our standards are those of any decent West End club’, vertelde de redacteur.
Men Only was een van de eerste tijdschriften gedrukt op pocket formaat. Een typisch nummer bevatte een reeks aan verhalen gericht op mannen onderweg: gedeelten uit populaire boeken en kortere verhalen van populaire auteurs en persoonlijkheden onder hen Winston Churchill, Evelyn Waugh en Seymour Hicks.
In 1950 slokte het zelfs het beroemde Strand Magazine, uit 'the Economist':
'A publishing house is a business enterprise whose projects must be financially sound, but it is also a trustee of the affections of the reading public, in Britain and overseas, and of that public's standards of taste. It is sad that George Newnes Ltd should have decided that of the three pocket monthly magazines which they publish, they should dispense with the Strand and concentrate on the publication of London Opinion and Men Only.' ('The end of the Strand,' December 17, p1342).
In de jaren 60 begon het lezers te verliezen aan naaktbladen als Playboy en Hustler, en begon het zelf ook kunstzinnige naakten te publiceren. Uiteindelijk werd het in 1971 overgenomen door Paul Raymond, een nachtclub eigenaar, die er een wat explicieter tijdschrift van maakte, en de directe concurrentie aanging met Playboy en Mayfair.
