Orval

The Abbey Notre-Dame d'Orval is a Cistercian abbey in the Belgian village of Villers-devant-Orval, a borough of Florenville in the province of Luxembourg. The abbey was established in 1132 in the Gaume region. The monastery is known for its history and spiritual life, but also for its Trappist beer (see Orval beer) and typical Trappist cheese.

In 1070, Italian monks settled in the county of Chiny in Belgium. Construction of a church and a small village had begun shortly before. Ten years later, the original monks reformed their community according to the rule of the Carthusians.

In 1132 the Carthusians ran into trouble. Count Albert of Chiny asked Bernard of Clairvaux to take over the foundation. He sent seven monks from the abbey of Trois-Fontaines. The canons already present joined the newcomers in the order of the Cistercians.

Around 1252 the monastery was destroyed by a fire. The rebuilding took about 100 years.

Several wars between France and neighboring regions (Burgundy, Spain) took place during the 15th and 16th centuries, affecting Orval. In 1637 the abbey was destroyed, but it was rebuilt.

In 1793 the abbey was definitively destroyed by the French revolutionary troops. The site was sold as a national asset and served as a quarry for a century.

In 1926, the then owners donated the site to the new non-profit association "l'Abbaye de Notre Dame d'Orval", with the intention of establishing a new Trappist monastery as a subsidiary of La Grande Trappe. The first monks did not come from La Grande Trappe, but from the Abbey of Sept-Fons. They returned to Europe from a failed monastery founding attempt in Brazil.

A new abbey was built over 22 years (from 1926 to 1948), designed by architect Henri Vaes. This was the work of the Gentenaar Dom Albert-Marie Van der Cruyssen, who became the first abbot in 1936.

In order to be able to pay for the large construction works, various collection activities were set up. For example, special stamps were issued with a surcharge. The cheese factory (1931) and the brewery (1932) were established to generate the necessary financial resources and employed laymen from the start. After the construction work, these revenues were used for social and charitable purposes.

The abbey consists of four parts: the actual cloister, which adjoins the central basilica and is only accessible to monks. The brewery that runs with external staff; the courtyard with the guest house and the part accessible to tourists such as the ruins of the old church, the fountain, the herb garden, the cinema and the abbey shop. Behind the abbey buildings are large ponds, agricultural and garden grounds and a forest.

Because of its exceptional beauty and special architecture, the Monastery of Orval is also called the "Versailles among the monasteries".
