Stefan Clément is an adventure series about a young man who gets involved in a robbery that goes completely out of control and then flees to India. Created by Swiss author Daniel Ceppi (1951-2024). More

At the age of 18, Daniel Ceppi set out for India (these were the only possible destinations for a penniless young man), the country of his heart, where he would live for many years in five stays.

He visited the not-so-accessible countries of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. His passport is stamped with visas, which are particularly difficult to obtain, from these Central Asian countries, which are generally subject to dictatorships.
In the album 'The Roads to Bharata' we see the giant Buddha statues of Bamyan, Afghanistan in 1977 (before they were blown up by the fundamentalist Muslims of the Taliban, on the orders of Mullah Omar, in March 2001).

He wrote Stefan's first story, "The Wasp's Nest" (Le Guêpier), as an autodidact. Ceppi drew inspiration from his own experiences. He decided to self-publish the comic strip in 1977.

Ceppi learned to draw comics during the first albums. He had no formal training in that field. The "amateur" style quickly transformed, becoming more robust and calmer. We're not in photographic realism, but rather in a kind of clear line. The first black-and-white version does have a certain "naive" charm.

In 1978, Les Humanoides Associés republished Le Guêpier in their Mirage collection. The hero, always getting into trouble, experiences his new adventures in the French magazine Métal Hurlant. Two new volumes appeared in the series: East of Karakulak (1978) and then The Lair of Kostov (1980).

These stories are in black and white and drawn in a style that no longer matches his new style, which has since further developed.

The following stories (1981 - 1985) then appeared in the magazine (À SUIVRE).
In the 1980s, the series was transferred to the Belgian publisher Casterman. Ceppi signed a contract stipulating that he would deliver a completely redesigned version of the first three volumes between two new albums.

From 1981 to 1986, Casterman published volumes 4 through 7 in her collection (To Be Continued), under the title: Een avontuur van Stefan (Une Aventure de Stéphane). At the same time, she republished the first three adventures in the redrawn and colored version.

In 1995, Ceppi continued the series and the stories were published directly in an album by Les Humanoides Associés.
These 8 stories were not published in Dutch.

Stefan's stories take place in the 1970s, in Eastern Europe and Asia (the era before mass tourism). Stefan has an incredible talent for getting into deep trouble wherever he goes, and just enough luck to get out of it...

It all starts with a plan to get money. Together with a (bad) friend, they plot a robbery at a jewelry store. It was supposed to be an easy deal, but things go awry, and someone ends up dead...
The bad friend is nowhere to be seen and... with the money, of course. Stefan is wanted and forced to flee. A flight east, towards the promised land of the hippies: India.

Back then, you hitchhiked or took the bus, of course, through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan (conservative religious extremism not yet sunk in)… Stéphane travels as best he can, and we travel with him, between beautiful girls and drug trafficking, shady friends and false trust, porn magazines and corrupt customs officers, exotic landscapes and hidden treasures.

The series beautifully captures the times. First, the hippie-style escape to the East, which transforms into a kind of traveler's blues where (harsh) reality must be faced. Not the hypocritical "everything's going well" travelogue, but a Stefan who, despite everything, tries to resolve things as best he can.

In short, an atypical but fascinating series. Highly recommended for all travel enthusiasts (real travel, not Club Med).
A hero like ourselves: not always brave, sometimes opportunistic and occasionally a little smart too!

Daniel Ceppi ging op zijn 18e op weg naar India (dit waren de enige mogelijke bestemmingen voor een straatarme jongeman), het land van zijn hart, waar hij, in vijf verblijven, jarenlang zal wonen.

Hij bezocht de, niet zo toegankelijke landen, Afghanistan, Oezbekistan, Kazachstan. In zijn paspoort staan de visa afgestempeld, die bijzonder moeilijk te krijgen zijn, uit deze Centraal-Aziatische landen die doorgaans onderworpen zijn aan dictatuur.

In het album ‘De wegen naar Bharata’ zien we de reusachtige Buddha beelden van Bamyan, Afghanistan in 1977 (Voordat deze werden opgeblazen door de fundamentalistische moslims van de Taliban, op bevel van Mullah Omar, in maart 2001).

Hij schreef het eerste verhaal van Stefan, Het wespennest (Le Guêpier) als autodidact. Ceppi putte inspiratie uit zijn eigen ervaringen. Hij besloot het stripverhaal uit te geven in 1977, in eigen beheer.

Ceppi leerde het striptekenen gedurende de eerste albums. Hij had geen enkele opleiding in die richting. De "amateuristische" lijn transformeert zich snel, wordt steviger en rustiger. We bevinden ons niet in het fotografisch realisme, maar eerder in een soort heldere lijn. De eerste versie in zwart/wit heeft wel de bepaalde ‘naïve’ charme.

In 1978 brachten Les Humanoides Associés Le Guêpier opnieuw uit in hun Mirage-collectie. De held, die altijd in de problemen komt, beleeft zijn nieuwe avonturen in het Franse blad Métal Hurlant. Er verschenen twee nieuwe delen in de serie: Ten oosten van Karakulak (1978) en vervolgens Het hol van Kostov (1980).

Deze verhalen zijn in zwart/wit en getekend in een stijl die niet meer aansluit bij zijn, ondertussen verder ontwikkelde, nieuwe stijl.

Daarna verschenen de volgende verhalen (1981 - 1985) in het blad (À SUIVRE).

In de jaren tachtig werd de serie overgedragen aan de Belgische uitgeverij Casterman. Ceppi sluit een contract waarin wordt bepaald dat hij tussen twee nieuwe albums een geheel hertekende versie moet afleveren van de eerste drie delen.

Zo publiceerde Casterman van 1981 tot 1986 de delen 4 tot en met 7 in haar collectie (Wordt vervolgd), onder de titel: Een avontuur van Stefan (Une Aventure de Stéphane). Tegelijkertijd bracht ze de eerste drie avonturen opnieuw uit in de hertekende en gekleurde versie.

In 1995 zette Ceppi de serie voort en verschenen de verhalen direct in album bij Les Humanoides Associés.

Deze 8 verhalen verschenen niet in het Nederlands.

De verhalen van Stefan spelen zich in de jaren ’70 af, in Oost-Europa en Azië. (De tijd vóór het Massa-toerisme). Stefan heeft het ongelooflijke talent om overal tot aan zijn nek in de problemen te raken, en net genoeg geluk om er weer uit te komen...

Het begint allemaal met een plan om aan geld te komen. Samen men een (foute) vriend beramen ze een overvalletje op een juwelierszaak. Het zou een gemakkelijk zaakje worden, maar het loopt anders en er valt een dode…

De foute vriend in nergens meer te bekennen en…, met de poen natuurlijk. Stefan wordt gezocht en moet vluchten. Een vlucht naar het oosten, richting het beloofde land van de hippies; India.

In die tijd ging je liften of met de bus, natuurlijk, via Turkije, Iran, Afghanistan (nog niet verzonken het conservatieve religieuse extremisme)… Stéphane reist zo goed en zo kwaad als het gaat, en wij reizen met hem mee, tussen mooie meiden en drugshandel, louche vrienden en vals vertrouwen, pornoblaadjes en corrupte douaniers, exotische landschappen en verborgen schatten.

De serie geeft een prachtig tijdsbeeld. Eerst de ontsnapping naar het oosten in hippiestijl, die zich getransformeerd in een soort reizigers-blues waar de (harde) realiteit onder ogen moet worden zien. Niet het hypocriete ‘alles gaat goed’ reisverhaal, maar een Stefan die probeert, ondanks alles, de zaken toch zo goed mogelijk op te lossen.

Kortom, een atypische maar fascinerende serie. Een aanrader voor alle reisliefhebbers (echte reizen, geen Club Med).

Een held zoals wij zelf: niet altijd dapper, soms opportunistisch en af en toe ook een beetje slim!
