Signor Spaghetti is the eponymous hero of a humorous comic strip series created in 1952 by cartoonist Dino Attanasio. But his adventures were not published until 1957 in Tintin magazine. More

Signor Spaghetti, who would later be called "Spaghetti", first appears in one- or two-page jokes before becoming the hero of long stories in album format. From 1957 to early 1965, René Goscinny wrote the scripts. After that, most of the scripts were written by Lucien Meys, Yves Duval, and Dino Attanasio himself.

In the album 'Spaghetti Looks for a Job', he finds himself adding a sidekick, his cousin Prosciutto, an incorrigible blunderer and bully who involves him in the most eccentric adventures. Their relationship is based on the classic mismatched duo: Spaghetti is cunninger, braver, and smarter (but with a good background), while Prosciutto means well but is very naive, fearful, and above all, prone to blundering. Both succumb to sudden and destructive fits of rage.

Puns based on the pronounced Italian accent and classic visual gags (traps, misunderstandings…) form the basis of the series.

Although he lives in a somewhat uncertain manner, Spaghetti never loses his good humor, except when he is dragged into some disaster by Prosciutto's unfortunate initiatives.

He loves his cousin but finds him pushy and problematic, so he often tries to escape from him.

Spaghetti presents a stereotypical Italian physique, distantly inspired by that of the creator. Attanasio, with a small moustache, initially thin with a pointed nose. His nose is then shortened and his physique is rounded.

Spaghetti is an Italian immigrant who lives in France and works many jobs to earn a living. Although he is often unemployed and frequently engages in manual labor, he is always impeccably dressed; he wears a black suit and a bow tie. He speaks in somewhat imperfect French, with a very strong Italian accent.

Spaghetti was originally conceived by Dino Attanasio as a kind of parody of the self-portrait. At a time when his career was struggling to get off the ground, and to boost his morale, the author envisioned a likeable and resourceful Italian immigrant who would maintain his enthusiasm under all circumstances. In 1952, Dino Attanasio conceived the character of Signor Spaghetti but did not use him in stories. In 1957, while working for the Journal de Tintin, the editor at the time, André Fernez, asked him to meet René Goscinny because he wrote many scripts for the magazine. Attanasio spoke about his character, and Goscinny agreed to write a short story for him. This appeared in October of the same year under the title 'Signor Spaghetti Guide' in the Belgian edition of the weekly Tintin.

Signor Spaghetti, initially a hero of one, two, or three-page jokes, quickly evolved into serials, always drawn by Attanasio. The first long adventure was titled 'Spaghetti and the Red Emerald' and appeared in April 1959 in the weekly Tintin magazine. After 16 stories, in 1965, Goscinny handed the baton to other writers, notably Francel, Sas, Yves Duval, Greg, and Meys. The series ended in 1979.

Spaghetti is one of René Goscinny's forgotten series, overshadowed by his successful series such as Asterix.

In the stories written by Goscinny, many characters bear the names of food: Provolone, Cannelloni, Ravioli, Ross Beef, Ossobuco, Zampone...

Pierre Seron assisted Attanasio with the sets for certain stories of Signor Spaghetti.

Attanasio vertelt over zijn karakter en Goscinny stemt ermee in een kort verhaal voor hem te schrijven. Deze verscheen in oktober van hetzelfde jaar onder de titel ‘Signor Spaghetti gids’ in de Belgische editie van het weekblad Kuifje.

Signor Spaghetti, eerst een held van grappen van één, twee of drie pagina’s, evolueert snel naar vervolgverhalen, altijd getekend door Attanasio. Het eerste lange avontuur heette ‘Spaghetti en de rode smaragd’ en verscheen in april 1959 in het weekblad Kuifje. Na 16 verhalen, in 1965, heeft Goscinny het stokje overgedragen aan andere scenaristen, met name Francel, Sas, Yves Duval, Greg en Meys. De serie stopte in 1979.

Spaghetti is een van de vergeten series van René Goscinny, overschaduwd door zijn succesvolle series als Asterix.

In de door Goscinny geschreven verhalen dragen veel personages de namen van voedsel: Provolone, Cannelloni, Ravioli, Ross Beef, Ossobuco, Zampone...

Pierre Seron assisteerde Attanasio voor de decors bij bepaalde verhalen van Signor Spaghetti.
