Lefranc is an adventure comic series by the Belgian screenwriter and artist Jacques Martin (1921-2010), also known from the Alex series. The first story 'The signal is on red' appeared in 1952. More

The main character of the series is the journalist Guy Lefranc. The first adventure, 'The Signal Is Red' (La Grande Menace), was published in Tintin in Belgium on May 21, 1952, and in France on July 3, 1952. It appeared as an album in the Lombard Collection in 1954.
The series continues to this day, and more than one and a half million copies have already been sold.

Guy Lefranc takes a young Boy Scout under his wing, his protégé Jeanjean (named Jan in the first translation). Furthermore, he works with Commissioner Renard and often faces the series' eternal villain, the mysterious Axel Borg.

Jacques Martin drew only the first three albums: La Grande Menace (1954), L'Ouragan de feu (1961), and Le Mystère Borg (1965), before dedicating himself exclusively to the script and leaving the drawings to Bob de Moor for the fourth album: Le Repaire du loup (1974), and subsequently to Gilles Chaillet for the next nine albums.

The origin
Three years after the creation of the young Gallic slave Alex (Alix), with whom he enjoyed enormous success in the weekly Tintin, Jacques Martin visited a friend in the Vosges in 1951. There, he saw the unfinished Urbès railway tunnel in Alsace, where the SS had parts manufactured during the war for the engines of the V1/V2 and for the jet engines of the Messerschmitt ME262. There were entire stockpiles of abandoned German weapons, including a V1 rocket ready to attack Paris. Thus, the author conceived the plan for a story that follows in the footsteps of the German occupation and the beginning of the Cold War, and of the character who would come to be named Guy Lefranc.

Jacques Martin said about this in 2002: “I presented this project to the Journal de Tintin, where they were very surprised. It didn't resemble my Alex series at all! But I insisted on making one story anyway. This was accepted on the condition that I transpose the characters of Alex and Enak to the present era, hence the creation of Jean-Jean. For the same reason, Lefranc is blond, just like Alex. I was young, I obeyed the orders of my editor-in-chief.”
On May 21, 1952, Lefranc's first adventure, *The Signal Is Red* , was published in weekly pages.

The success was immediate. Hergé, greatly impressed by Jacques Martin's graphic achievements, asked him to collaborate with him in the Hergé Studios: the author of Alex agreed in November 1953.

The triumph of 'Het sein staat op rood' in 1952 ignited a great rage in the temperamental Edgar P. Jacobs against the magazine's editors, and he accused Jacques Martin of having stolen the style of Blake and Mortimer. He allegedly even challenged him to a duel in a letter addressed to him.
(A few years later, at the time of the story 'Poisonous Snow', probably in 1964 during its first publication in the Tintin magazine, Edgar P. Jacobs congratulated him on all his work and offered his apologies, saying that “it was a joke”).

In 1954, Lombard published the first album, without mentioning Lefranc in the title or any indication of the start of a series. It immediately became a huge sales success. Jacques Martin was just about to propose a project for a new installment of Alex to editor-in-chief André Fernez when the latter asked for the Lefranc adventures to be continued.

The story 'The Master of the Atom' was initially conceived by Jacques Martin as a successor to 'The Signal Is Red', but was shelved deep in a drawer in concept form. It was not until much later (in 2006) that it was completed, respecting the original scenario. This album therefore fits chronologically between 'The Signal Is Red' and 'The Sea of Fire'.

Lefranc's second adventure, *The Firestorm *, appeared in the Tintin magazine from October 1959 to November 1960, before being published as an album by Lombard in 1961. Guy Lefranc already had a fondness for Jean-Jean, the young orphan Boy Scout he took under his wing. In this new adventure, he discovers part of his protégé's family and the magnificent invention they have developed.

Jacques Martin subsequently wrote the third volume, *The Toxic Snow* , in which Lefranc and Jeanjean find themselves in the winter sports resort of Gardsten in Switzerland, facing their enemy Axel Borg and his bacteriological bomb. At Martin's request, his friends and fellow collaborators from the Hergé Studio, Roger Leloup and Bob de Moor, assisted him with the sets.
This volume, the publication of which began on April 21, 1964, in the weekly Tintin, was released as an album by Casterman in 1965; and is the last album drawn by the author.

Jacques Martin met publisher Louis-Robert Casterman in 1965 thanks to the intervention of Hergé: The Adventures of Lefranc subsequently continued with Casterman from that year onwards, and a year later, 'The Signal is Red' was reissued. However, 'The Firestorm' was not released until 1975, with a new cover.

Subsequently, Jacques Martin entrusted two series of albums to two different teams: some remained set in the 1950s era, and the others are set in the era for which they were drawn.

Casterman wants to release one album per year for both Lefranc and Alex, and Jacques Martin can no longer meet the demand. He sounded out his young assistant Roger Leloup, who, initially interested, ultimately declined in favor of his own project. Leloup: “I felt very honored by this show of trust, but I told myself that if I were really capable of producing a series myself, it would be better to create my own characters. Indirectly, Jacques Martin’s proposal prompted me to leave the studios to create Yoko Tsuno.”

Afterwards, Martin proposed the same to his friend Bob de Moor, who immediately accepted it with enthusiasm. Consequently, they collaborated at Studio Hergé on the creation of *The Wolf's Den* . Martin even considered keeping Bob de Moor on board to continue the series, but Hergé refused to let one of his collaborators work outside his studio.

The author then sought another illustrator in the mid-seventies and found Gilles Chaillet.

This young man had made a test page which he sent to Claude Moliterni, an editor at Dargaud. Moliterni then took it to the Casterman office and said that he had found the page while clearing out original plates by Jacques Martin at Dargaud. The editors at Casterman examined the page and wondered from which album it might have come, whereupon Claude Moliterni admitted that it was the work of Gilles Chaillet. The publishers therefore decided to send it to Jacques Martin.

Gilles Chaille recounts what happened when he visited Jacques Martin: “He had my proof page in his hand, with red correction marks on it. He said to me: ‘You don’t draw very well, but what is surprising is that you draw my world as if I were the one who conceived it. If you agree to the corrections, I will give you the first pages of a scenario by Lefranc, and if I like it, we will make an album together.’ So that is how we started on The Gates of Hell .”
At the same time, in 1980, Chaillet created his own Vasco series without abandoning Lefranc, but in the late nineties he eventually had to set the series aside due to the sheer volume of work. Jacques Martin felt great disappointment at the end of their collaboration in 1997.

Casterman Publishing still continues the series with rotating teams of illustrators and scriptwriters.

Woede van Edgar P. Jacobs

Guy Lefranc had al een voorliefde voor Jeanjean, de jonge wees-padvinder die hij onder zijn hoede nam.
