GENERAL

The first stamps of the Azores were the stamps of D. Luis I with curved bar overprinted with ACORES in capital letters. This overprint was used until 1882. In the period after that, until 1895, Portuguese stamps were overprinted with acores, ie lower case letters. In 1898 the first 'real' Azores stamps were issued: 400 years of discovery of the sea route to India. The issue of its own stamps lasted until 1912. The same series was then overprinted REPUBLICA.
From 1912 on, the custom of overprinting the stamps of the Portuguese mainland with ACORES was reverted to. From 1931 to 1980, the mainland stamps were used.

Before the issue of the first stamps, the oldest stamps of Portugal can also be traced back to the Azores. For the period 1853-1869 round numbered cancels were used:
48 - Angra do Heroismo (Terceira)
49 - Horta (Fayal)
50 - Ponta Delgada (S. Miguel)

In the period 1869-1878 oval numbered cancels were used. The numbering for this period:

ACORES overprint
Three types of overprints with capital letters are known:
A - C and O are rounded, greater distance between C and O compared to type B. The C is not properly aligned.
B - C and O are rounded, smaller distance between C and O compared to type A.
C - C and O are quasi rectangular.

Numerous forgeries are known of the first ACORES and acores overprints.
