Antwerp

Antwerp is the capital of the Belgian province of Antwerp and of the district of the same name. By surface, Antwerp is the third largest municipality in Belgium, after Tournai and Couvin.

The city is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antwerp and the Anglican Archdeaconate of Northwestern Europe.

Antwerp lies largely on the right bank of the Scheldt and is known for its extensive port area with international freight transport and diamond trade.

The inhabitants of Antwerp are also called Sinjoren, after the Spanish word señor.

The toponym "Antwerp" can be explained etymologically and archaeologically from the name given to the site of the first settlement at the 'anda verpa', which is actually Germanic for 'cast-in grounds' (in a bend of the river).

Antwerp has a long history. Around 1400 Antwerp was still a small city, with less than 10,000 inhabitants.
Under Emperor Charles V, Antwerp was the most important trading city in Europe north of the Alps. An unprecedented cultural boom went hand in hand with increasing prosperity. Painting, in particular, boomed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Due to the many influences, first Lutheranism and later from the end of the 16th century especially Calvinism gained a large following in the city.

The troubles of the uprising against Spain have caused great damage to the city. In 1576, the city was sacked by mutinous Spanish mercenaries, who murdered 7,000 civilians (Spanish Fury). The city then joined the "Pacification of Ghent" and was the capital of the anti-Spanish revolt for the next nine years. In 1585 Antwerp was conquered by the Spanish stadtholder Alexander Farnese after a siege. After that conquest, about half of the population left for Zeeland (Middelburg) and Holland. The population figure dropped from about 80,000 to 42,000. Dutch and Zeeland ships blocked the Scheldt estuary and thus cut off the Spanish-owned city from overseas trade. Antwerp's flourishing trade, arts and sciences were further developed in the Northern Netherlands "Golden Age".

In the next two centuries Antwerp would no longer achieve the prosperity of the preceding period. Nevertheless, it remained one of the most important economic and cultural centers of the Spanish and later Austrian Netherlands. In its own Golden Age it produced great painters such as Rubens, Jordaens and Teniers. As a Roman Catholic stronghold in the Counter-Reformation, great art and buildings were built, mainly in Baroque style.
