In 1976, Jean-Michel Charlier and Jean Giraud decided to create a story for a special Western edition of Pilote (no. 25 bis of June 1976) featuring a new character: Jim Cutlass. This 17-page story would be included in an album in 1979, supplemented by 43 pages, under the title Mississippi River.

Almost ten years later, when Charlier arrives on page thirty-six with a new Jim Cutlass story, he exchanges this world for the other. Christian Rossi hears the news in Los Angeles. He finds it unbearable that the series would be over with this and wants to breathe new life into the characters. He writes the ending of the story on the plane back. Jim Cutlass must not die.
He will draw the sequel himself, and Jean Giraud will write the script this time.

Jim Cutlass, a former Northern officer and staunch anti-slavery man, heads south to claim an uncle's inheritance. There he meets his cousin Carolyn, with whom he must share the inheritance and with whom he falls madly in love…

June 1859 – On the waters of the Mississippi, aboard the Alabama Queen. Jim Cutlass, a boy from the South, fresh from West Point, is playing a game of poker against a certain Playcard. The game goes wrong, and the young man knocks out Playcard, who was cheating. At the same time, Black slaves escape under the leadership of a certain Bas Rouge. Most are caught. During his escape, Bas Rouge is nearly murdered by his owner, Don Clay. Jim Cutlass saves his life. Under Southern law, he is to be imprisoned for aiding a runaway slave. He manages to escape and goes to New Orleans to claim his inheritance: the Cyprus Lodge plantation. But a surprise awaits him: he must share his inheritance with his cousin, a beautiful young woman, who is engaged to... Don Clay.
He immediately gets into a conflict with Don Clay (who looks like Clark Gable from 'Gone with the Wind'), a wealthy slave trader, and his subordinate Playcard. Cutlass argues with everyone and decides to just abandon the entire plantation…

Then the American Civil War breaks out (1961-1865), and it is only four years later that he returns to the South as the winner of the war.
His superiors order him to investigate the Ku Klux Klan.
Through this assignment, he will cross paths with Carolyn, Don Clay, and Playcard again.

His investigation uncovers a secret war between the Ku Klux Klan and the mysterious White Alligator, a black albino who promises his people a Black America.
The supernatural background of White Alligator, leader of a voodoo cult set against the backdrop of the oppressive, humid atmosphere of South Louisiana and cosmopolitan New Orleans, the Babylon of the Mississippi, plunges the series into a swamp of unreal events…

When Giraud took over the script, he brought a certain 'Moebius quality' that pushes the series in a surreal direction.

In 1976 besluiten Jean-Michel Charlier en Jean Giraud een verhaal te maken voor een speciale Western-editie van Pilote (nr. 25 bis van juni 1976) met een nieuw personage: Jim Cutlass. Dit verhaal van 17 pagina’s zal in 1979 worden opgenomen in een album, aangevuld met 43 pagina’s, onder de titel Mississippi River.

Bijna tien jaar later, als Charlier, met een nieuw verhaal van Jim Cutlass op pagina zesendertig aankomt, verruilt hij deze wereld voor de andere wereld. Christian Rossi hoort het nieuws in Los Angeles. Hij vindt het onverteerbaar dat de serie hiermee afgelopen zou zijn en wil de personages nieuw leven inblazen. Zijn superieuren geven hem de opdracht om de Ku Klux Klan te onderzoeken.

Door deze opdracht zal hij het pad van Carolyn, Don Clay en Playcard weer kruizen.

Zijn onderzoek brengt een geheime oorlog aan het licht tussen de Ku Klux Klan en de mysterieuze Witte Alligator, een zwarte albino die zijn volk een zwart Amerika belooft.

De bovennatuurlijke achtergrond van Witte Alligator, leider van een voodoo-cultus in een omlijsting van de bedrukkende, vochtige atmosfeer van South-Louisiana en het kosmopolitische New-Orleans, het Babylon van de Mississippi, maakt dat de serie wordt ondergedompeld in een moeras van onwerkelijke gebeurtenissen…

Toen Giraud het scenario overnam, bracht hij een bepaalde ‘Moebius-kwaliteit’ mee, die de serie een surrealistische kant op stuwt.
