Hoempa Pa (Oumpah-Pah) is the hero of a humorous comic strip series, created by René Goscinny (script) and Albert Uderzo (illustrations), which first appeared in the magazine Kuifje/Tintin in 1958. More

The story is set in 18th-century America, during the time of the French colonization of North America. Hoempa Pa (Oumpah-Pah), a very strong Native American, captures the French aristocrat and colonist Hubert Van Bladerdeeg (Hubert de la Pâte Feuilletée). First draft (1951)
Hoempa Pa is the first character conceived by the duo Uderzo-Goscinny. In the first version of the series, which was exclusively humorous in nature, Hoempa Pa is a young Native American from the Shavashava tribe who lives on a reservation and is confronted with the modernity of his peers in the neighborhood, while the indigenous Indian village has preserved its ancestral rites. However, the authors were unable to find a publisher for their series. Hoping for better times, Goscinny and Uderzo worked for a women's magazine. It was there that one of the Dupuis brothers—publisher of the magazine Spirou and the women's magazine Bonnes Soirées—visited the agency one day. Sketches of their hero were hanging on the wall for the occasion, but the two friends received nothing but encouragement.

The publisher wanted to establish a television guide in New York called TV Family and entrusted René Goscinny with the task of assembling the team. Hoping to establish the character in the United States, the writer took the six illustrated pages of Hoompa Pa with him. Thanks to the help of various American colleagues, he met Milton Caniff's letterer, who rewrote the speech bubbles in English. Although the American magazine experiment was short-lived, Goscinny could not find a publisher for Hoompa Pa in the United States; after a few months, he returned to France. Rebirth (1958)
The character was not revived until 1958. André Fernez, editor-in-chief of the magazine Kuifje/Tintin, who appreciated the jokes of Poussin and Poussif, asked Goscinny to propose a sequel that would be drawn by Uderzo. The writer then seized the opportunity to bring Hoompa Pa back to life. The concept was adapted; the story is now set in the 18th century in New France, a colony of the Kingdom of France in what is now Canada and Quebec. Hoompa Pa is no longer a Flatfoot, but a Shavashava who meets European colonists and befriends Hubert of Puffball, a French nobleman. To this end, Goscinny researched the Shawnee Indians, although humor once again prevails over historical accuracy. The comics were published in the magazine Kuifje; the first installment appeared in issue 14 on April 2. Four other installments were published in the same magazine. The series ended in 1962 following a reader poll. This monthly practice, which also occurred in the Belgian version of the weekly, aimed to compile a ranking of the public's ten favorite series. Hoempa Pa finished in 11th place, which was a disappointment for Goscinny and Uderzo. In reality, the main reason for discontinuing Hoempa Pa was the increasing workload due to the newly established magazine Pilote, and particularly the Asterix series. Hoempa Pa (Oumpah-Pah)
Hoempa Pa is the bravest of the Shavashava tribe. As a Native American warrior, protected by his Puma totem and by Nanabozho, the Great Rabbit, he uses his strength and cunning to serve his tribe and all his friends.

The expression "oumpah-pah" seems to refer to the three beats of a waltz, and even a musette waltz. But it is primarily a phonetic reference to the Hunkpapa clan, which, along with six other clans, formed the Lakota Sioux tribe.

Hubert Van Blaerdeeg (Hubert de la Pâte Feuilletée)
Hubert Van Bladerdeeg is the King's Chavalier, as brave as he is absent-minded. After he became Oumpah-Pah's blood brother, he retained the nickname "Double Scalp" because of his powdered wig.

On October 12, 2011, Éditions Albert René published a new Complete Collection of the Adventures of Oumpah-Pah. In addition to the five Oumpah-Pah adventures, this book contains the eight pages of the very first (unpublished) version of Oumpah-Pah, and sixteen previously unpublished pages illustrated with original drawings and documents by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. This album was reissued in 2018 to mark the 60th anniversary of the meeting between René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, with a new cover but with exactly the same content.
