Stamps from Vatican City

Vaticaanstad

Vatican City, usually simply called the Vatican, is the smallest independent state in the world. Officially, it is called the State of Vatican City (Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanæ). It is located in the center of the city of Rome, on the Italian peninsula, and has no access to the sea. With approximately 882 inhabitants and an area of only 0.44 km², it is the smallest sovereign state in terms of both population and size, and at the same time one of the most densely populated.

The form of government is an elected absolute monarchy. The Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, is elected and serves as head of state.

Vatican City was officially established on June 7, 1929, following the signing of the Lateran Treaties on February 11 of that year. These were concluded between the Kingdom of Italy, represented by Benito Mussolini, and the Holy See, represented by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri. The territory of the state lies entirely within Rome, making it an enclave within Italy.

In the Executive Council, Italian is the official language, while Latin remains the official language of the Holy See.

Although Vatican City mints its own coins, it uses the euro thanks to a monetary agreement with Italy. The euro coins have a national side featuring symbols of the Vatican, often the coat of arms of the reigning Pope. In addition, the state issues its own postage stamps, which are valid worldwide via the Vatican postal service. Commemorative coins and stamps, in particular, are popular among collectors.

Furthermore, the Vatican has its own media, such as the newspaper "L'Osservatore Romano" (founded in 1861) and Radio Vaticana, which has been broadcasting in multiple languages since 1931. Since 1984, the entire territory of Vatican City has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Vatican City is a country in central Italy, an enclave within the Italian capital, Rome. In 1929, Vatican City, the remnant of the former Papal States, regained its independence from Italy. Since then, Vatican City has issued its own postage stamps.
