The first references to the city date from the Middle Ages, from 1111 (Treinchen) and 1113 (Trenciniensis, as an adjective). The general prevailing opinion is that it is a contraction of the given name Trnka or Trenka with a conjugation -in denoting a possession (of Trnka or Trenka). The German and Hungarian form are derived from the Slovak form and are close in pronunciation. From the Middle Ages, when the city was Hungarian, the castle in this city was the headquarters of the County of Trencsén, from 1650 the city of the same name and remained so until 1920, when the city became part of Czechoslovakia.
