Original political/editorial cartoon, 1948, by American editorial cartoonist Max P. Milians (1908-2005), probably for the Jewish Standard, with which he was associated for most of his life, although his work was also syndicated across America from the 1930s to the 1970s. Milians signed his cartoons with nine zeros as a punning underline. The cartoon shows the UN riding a rather battered dove of peace with their ‘peace hopes’ during United Nations Week, which ran for the first time from 20 to 26 October 1948. That the UN and its member states faced a massive challenge is illustrated by the various explosions below: the blockade of Berlin by the Soviets was well under way, the nuclear arms race was hotting up without any sign of limitation agreements between the great powers, and the situation in Palestine had deteriorated into open war between the Arabs and Israelis. Produced in ink and crayon over graphite on artist’s card; image area 30 x 26.5 cm, card size 36.5 x 28.5 cm. Signed lower right. Very good condition
