Original two-panel editorial cartoon, 1947, by American editorial cartoonist Max P. Milians (1908-2005), probably for the Jewish Standard, with which he was associated for most of his life, although his work was also syndicated across America from the 1930s to the 1970s. Milians signed his cartoons with nine zeros as a punning underline. The cartoon comments on the arguments used to justify US non-intervention in worldwide conflicts, first in 1941 when war was raging in Europe and the Japanese threat was growing in the far east. Six years later in 1947, and after WW2, the same arguments are being used to play down the threat from the Soviet Union and criticise the proposed Marshall Plan to aid the struggling West European countries. Produced in ink and crayon over graphite on artist’s card; image area 31 x 27 cm, card size 36.5 x 29 cm. Signed lower right. Verso blank. Closed tear to lower right margin, otherwise in very good bright condition.
