Details

Variable in shell shape and pattern. Also known as "raybaudi" which is used for the shells from the Mediterranean Sea. DNA testing is needed to show whether this is the same species or a different species. Common in the Mediterranean, with populations in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. Recently also observed in Italy. Originally described from shells from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, but ended up in European waters via the Suez Canal. Medium size 40 - 60 mm. Recognizable by the pink or white mouth with white lip and columella and the more robust shell compared to C. decorus. The pattern also differs between the two species.
