Of the three new models of rangefinder cameras with which the Japanese camera factory Kuribayashi came onto the market in the early 1960s, this Petri 7-S is the second model in that series. The 7-S was released in 1962 as the successor to the Petri 7 from 1961. At the same time, the Petri Pro 7 came on the market in a (professional) black version. A characteristic detail of these three cameras is the green colored rangefinder glass. Referred to as "Green-O-Matic Finder" in Petri advertising brochures. The light green tinted viewfinder image makes the measuring field of the (linked) rangefinder more visible. In 1972 the 7-S was produced again with the new type designation the 7-S II. This is completely identical to the 7-S except for a few minor cosmetic changes, but the characteristic green rangefinder glass has been replaced by a traditional gray glass.
