Battery factory C. Herberhold was founded on October 1, 1926 at Westerdijk 1, in the Utrecht district of Pijlsweerd. Caspar Paul Herberhold [1] from Germany started in 1916 together with his brother-in-law Ernst Zur Lage at 14 Venestraat in Zwolle as a merchant, battery manufacturer and bicycle builder. However, five years later, in 1921, Herberhold went bankrupt. [2] In 1926 Herberhold started again, now at 1 Westerdijk in Utrecht in a bicycle repair shop where batteries were also made. This went so well that the two cases of bicycle repair and batteries were separated and C. Herberhold continued with the battery manufacture alone. The building that was offered for rent was purchased and thus the C. Herberhold battery factory was created, which later went on to make the well-known battery with the name De Witte Kat. In 1930 the factory moved to the corner of the Lijnweg (now the Nieuwe Pijlsweerdstraat) and the Balkstraat 1-3 [3], not far from the old location. About 150 people came to work at the new location. Around 1951, battery factory C. Herberhold merged with the company Herlage, under the name Batterijenfabriek Herberhold. A takeover by VARTA followed in 1984. Herberholt N.V. was converted into VARTA B.V., which also took over other battery manufacturers. In 2009 VARTA stopped the production of the De Witte Kat battery. With that, this familiar to the Netherlands disappeared
