Pum Pum No. 22, September 19, 1951. Weekly supplement to the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. Subscription price 3.5 Bfr. per number. Initially, the magazine appeared from April 25, 1951 to February 25, 1953 as an independent magazine Het Laatste Nieuws, but then it became a free supplement to the newspaper. The title of the magazine Pum Pum was named after the character "Pum-Pum" from Hans Kresse's comic series Eric de Noorman, a comic book series that was also published in the magazine. Other Dutch draftsmen, such as Marten Toonder, Piet Wijn, Henk Sprenger, Gerrit Stapel, J.H. Koelewijn and Wim Lensen were discussed, as well as work by American and British draftsmen. Belgian contributions were made by Edgar P. Jacobs, Bob De Moor and André Franquin. "Patava, de Holenjongen", new from Pum Pum 1951 no.16 by Henk Sprenger, born January 3, 1919, died December 29, 2005. He was a Dutch cartoonist, whose comics enjoyed unprecedented fame in the 1950s. The same goes for 'Pilot Storm' and 'Monus, de Man van de Maan', which appeared in the newspaper and Tom Poes Weekblad. A characteristic of Sprenger's comics was the humorous way in which he portrayed certain expressions and sayings he portrayed. In the Second World War, Sprenger was active at the Toonder Studios in Amsterdam. He worked in the cartoon department as an animator. At that time he made drawings for the magazine Metro, which was printed by the D.A.V.I.D. (The General Free Illegal Printer). In 1948 Sprenger illustrated the book 'Patave the cave young'. In 1951 an adaptation of this book was published in the weekly Pum Pum. The Captain and the Scamp "deals with the adventures of a captain with his family and an old professor who lives on a tropical island. Life is not easy for the sailor. In the first place, he has trouble with the language, in the second place, he has a difficult wife and in the third place are his sons, Hans and Frits, the naughtiest boys who have ever walked around in a comic. "The Captain and the Scamps" is the oldest newspaper cartoon. It was commissioned in 1897 by the American magazine king Hearst, designed by the draughtsmen Knerr and Dirks (who themselves were emigrants like the captain).
