Original two-panel political cartoon in ink and crayon on board, published in the Daily Express, 1940, shows in the upper panel a Nazi pirate clubbing an allied sailor on a ‘neutral water way’ or ‘high sea lane’ while saying ‘it hurts me more than it does you’, while in the lower panel an allied sailor is returning the compliment ‘Off Skagerrak’ with the words ‘you said it! In April 1940 the battle of Narvik took place (also referred to at the time as the Battle of Skagerrak) during the struggle between the Allies and Germany for control of neutral Norway. German losses were high: they lost 10 destroyers (50% of their entire destroyer force), one submarine and several support ships. The Allies had sea and air superiority until the very last stage of the operation, but did not take full advantage of this, so while the Germans lost the naval battle, the German army nevertheless achieved their main goal of successfully invading and occupying Norway. Following this failure in Norway, it became clear that the the British had lost confidence in Chamberlain's prosecution of the war, and so he resigned and was replaced by Winston Churchill. Framed and mounted for an overall size of 61 x 53 cm, image size 43 x 33.5 cm, signed upper right, caption in upper border is concealed by mount.
