Original editorial cartoon on card in ink and crayon, probably for the Texas Spectator, 1939, shows Adolf Hitler as a demonic wizard trying to stir up ‘strife’ and ‘hate’ in Slovakia. The state of Czechoslovakia had been set up in 1919 following World War One. Following the Munich Agreement of September 1938, Hitler went to work to sow discord between the Czechs and Slovaks, as this would make it easier to gain control over the whole area. He had various plans for Slovakia. He wanted to make Slovakia a separate state under the influence of Germany, and a potential strategic base for later German attacks on Poland and other regions. In March 1939 the Slovak parliament approved the idea of Slovakia's independence, so Hitler’s tactics paid off and he was able to invade the Czech part of the country a few days later with little or no resistance. ‘You must have been a beautiful baby’ recorded by Bing Crosby was a song which was very popular at the time. Card size 39 x 34 cm (15.5 x 13.5 inch), image size 32 x 28 cm, signed lower right, caption in pencil in upper border. Slightly browned, otherwise in very good condition.
