Original editorial cartoon on card in ink and crayon for the Newark (New Jersey) Evening News, 1939, shows the effect of ‘Father Time’ on David Lloyd George, who had been British prime minister during WW1. On the left he is seen in 1918 roaring like a lion to ‘Make Germany Pay’ for the cost of the war, even though during the actual peace conference his tone was more moderate - he did not think it wise to destroy the German economy and political system with massive reparations. On the right he is shown as a ‘lamb’. After 1923 he could be said to have been consistently pro-German. In September 1936 he went to Germany to talk with German leader Adolf Hitler. After his visit Lloyd George described Hitler as "the greatest living German", and “the George Washington of Germany”. Card size 51 x 38 cm (20 x 15 inch), image size 47 x 36 cm, signed lower right, caption written in crayon in lower border. Some card loss along left border, otherwise in very good condition
