Simferopol (Russian: Симферополь; Ukrainian: Сімферополь; Crimean Tatar: Aqmescit) is the capital of the Autonomous Crimean Republic, on the Crimean peninsula, a territory governed by Russia. Officially it is part of Ukraine. The city itself forms an urban district within the autonomous republic and is also the administrative center of the Simferopol district of the same name around the city. Simferopol is located on a small river, the Salgir, on the north side of the Crimean Mountains. The city has 363,597 inhabitants (2001). Within the city limits are the famous archaeological remains of the Scythian city of Neapolis. Later, after the Scythians were chased away by the Goths, the Crimean Tatars founded the city of Aqmescit. After the conquest of Crimea by Russia under Catherine II, the name of the city was changed to Simferopol in 1784. Its name comes from the Greek Sympheropolis (Συμφερόπολις). (source Wiki)
