Slantsy (Russian: Сланцы) is a Russian city in Leningrad Oblast, located nearly 200 kilometers southwest of Saint Petersburg. It is the main city of the district of the same name. It is located on the Pljoessa River. The population is around 36,000, in 1989 this was more than 43,000. The settlement was founded in 1934, and was given city status in 1949. Slantsy is Russian for shale, a hardened surface sediment containing kerogen, which in turn yields oil when heated. Much of the city was employed in the oil industry. Already in the 19th century, long before the city was founded, the extracted oil was used to illuminate the streets of St. Petersburg, among other things. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the mines were closed, resulting in unemployment in the region. The decreased population reflects this. (source Wiki)
