Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1940, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a hooked cross, or swastika, with the head of Hitler, representing ‘Nazi conquest’ grappling with a monkey wrench representing ‘organized sabotage’ in Europe. This probably refers to the work of resistance movements in countries occupied by Germany after June 1940, e.g. France, Norway, the Low Countries. Card size 36 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 32 x 26 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, in good condition. Verso: “New Jersey racing” Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1940, published in the Jersey Press, shows a racehorse floored by ‘political interference’ while a ‘N.J. tax payer’ looks pensive about ‘income problems’. On the other side of the fence ‘N.Y. racing’ is providing ‘$180,000 weekly state income’, presumably for the State of New York. People are perhaps apprehensive that government interference in ‘New Jersey racing’ will damage the horse-racing industry. Image size 32 x 26 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption (illegible) in pencil in upper border, some paper remnants also slightly affecting image, otherwise in good condition.
