Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1941, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a gun barrel producing bags of dollars and pumpkins representing ‘payrolls increase’, ‘relief drop’ and ‘farm income rise’. At the time of this cartoon the war in Europe had been going on for nearly two years and the United States was still not actively involved. The US economy benefited enormously however from the demand for American goods from Europe, and Britain in particular, such as food and weapons. The horn of plenty/gun barrel represents the recovery of the US economy after years of depression, this largely thanks to ‘armament production’ for the war in Europe and elsewhere. Card size 36 x 29 cm (14 x 11 inch), image size 32 x 25 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, in very good condition. Verso: “What would he really say today?” Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1941, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows George Washington looking down on various individuals representing ‘Big army advocate’ ‘Jingo’, ‘Isolationist’ and the GOP elephant and the ‘Dems’ donkey, looking for guidance in America’s present situation among statements made by Washington, such as ‘in time of peace prepare for war’, each using such statements to support their own particular view. At the time of this cartoon the war in Europe had been going on for nearly two years and the United States, while still not involved militarily, was actively supporting Britain in its resistance to Nazi Germany, although isolationist sentiment prevented Roosevelt from taking the United States into the war. Image size 30 x 25 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, paper remnants around borders, otherwise in good condition.
