Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1947, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows the mythological figure of Atlas struggling to hold the earth on his shoulders, and Uncle Sam coming to the rescue. In October 1947 President Truman called a special session of Congress. He was seeking urgent approval by Congress of measures to deal with the alarming and continuing increase in prices in the USA and the situation regarding the need for emergency foreign aid. He believed it was necessary for the American Government to take steps to meet the crisis in Western Europe, where certain countries, notably France and Italy, had exhausted their financial resources and were unable to purchase the food and fuel essential for their people to survive the coming winter. Card size 37 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 31 x 27 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. In very good condition. Verso: “New highs” Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1947, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows ‘grain prices’ pulling up ‘hog prices’, this apparently the result of ‘administration bungling’. The Democrat president Truman, represented by the donkey, struggled to control inflation in the post-war years. The continuing increase in prices led to a special session of Congress being called in October 1947. Image size 30 x 26.5 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Glue staining around borders, otherwise in good condition.
